It is with sadness and respect that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Hugh McQueen, KC, on February 16, 2026.
A foundational figure in the history of Carbert Waite LLP, Hugh was part of shaping the culture of excellence that defines our firm today. When he joined our founding partners Louise Fontaine KC, Marlene Stones KC and Blair Carbert KC in 1999, he brought with him decades of seasoned judgment and a distinguished reputation as a commercial, real estate, and wills and estates practitioner. His decision to practice at Stones Fontaine Carbert was at a pivotal moment in our firm’s launch, providing the bedrock of experience and mentorship that allowed our practice to thrive.
Hugh’s career in law spanned 45 years. A graduate of the University of Alberta, he spent his first 35 years at MacKimmie Matthews, where he joined the partnership in 1976. Appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1990, Hugh was well-respected in the Calgary legal community, and the loyalty of his longstanding clients (indeed friends) was particularly notable. He served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta and as President of both the Calgary Bar Association and the Calgary Bar Historical Society. A dedicated educator through the Legal Education Society of Alberta, Hugh was always ready to share his experience and provide steady guidance to young lawyers, a legacy of mentorship that remains a core pillar of our firm’s values. His civic contributions included his service as Vice-Chair of the Accreditation Committee for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.
Beyond the office, Hugh was a man of remarkable character: a fierce, competitive athlete who played organized hockey for 66 years, and a dedicated gentleman who placed his family above all else. He shared 65 wonderful years with his high school sweetheart, Gail. Whether he was guiding skiers at Panorama, enjoying time at the family cabin at Lake Windermere, or delivering a trademark dry, deadpan punchline, Hugh had an incredible ability to bring people together. He made everyone feel like a friend, and he possessed an integrity that defined his professional and personal life.
Our thoughts remain with Hugh’s wife, Gail; his children, Steve, Grant, and Karen; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and the countless colleagues and clients whose lives he touched throughout his extraordinary career.
Hugh was a a mentor; a seasoned and reliable advisor on ethics, client service, and the practice of law. We are grateful for his contributions, his friendship, and the enduring example he set.
