Biography

Teresa obtained her LL.B. in 1997 from the University of Saskatchewan and completed her articles at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Regina, SK. Since moving to Calgary in 2000, she has worked both in private practice as well as in-house for the Alberta Securities Commission, the Calgary Health Region, the Calgary Police Service and Alberta Health Services. Teresa joined Carbert Waite LLP in 2012 as a senior associate and practiced with the firm until 2018, primarily in the areas of health law and employment law.

During her time spent working for the Calgary Health Region and Alberta Health Services, Teresa worked within the Litigation Group as well as provided advice in relation to many areas of health law (including defence of medical negligence claims, consent to treatment, public health issues, fatality inquiries, regulatory investigations, reporting obligations related to medical devices, and health information and privacy issues).

Teresa rejoined Carbert Waite LLP in the role of Counsel in 2020 and practices solely in the area of health law, with a focus on defence of complex medical malpractice claims. Teresa also provides advice to health clients in relation to adverse events investigations, Human Rights complaints, Fatality Inquiries and complaints to regulatory bodies of various types of health professionals. Teresa also served on the Executive of the Canadian Bar Association Alberta Branch Health Law Section for a number of years.

Teresa’s experience in health law while working for large public employers, combined with her private practice litigation background, give her a unique perspective in assisting and advising clients in this area.
