Biography
Blair began his legal career with MacKimmie Matthews in 1986 and was a founding partner of Carbert Waite LLP in 1999. In 2022, Blair was appointed a King’s Counsel.
Blair’s diverse practice of law has taken him to Canada’s three coasts, advising and acting for individuals, corporations, estates, public institutions and governments. As a senior partner with Carbert Waite LLP, Blair engages on a wide range of difficult cases that demand an advanced understanding of the law, relentless inquiry into the facts, appropriate strategic reasoning, and sound judgment.
Blair has defended healthcare institutions and health professionals since the early 1990s – in all types of malpractice and other claims. Blair has also advised hospitals and healthcare institutions on their legal rights and responsibilities regarding patients, visitors, employees, and medical staff members. He has been counsel in numerous public fatality inquiries in the Alberta Court of Justice.
Blair maintains an active practice in commercial litigation, estate litigation and condominium litigation. He has litigated cases in the energy, construction and real estate industries. He is highly experienced in a broad range of insurance coverage and claims issues – including large industrial and construction losses, professional liability and serious personal injury claims.
Blair has appeared as counsel before all levels of court in Alberta as well as the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. Blair has represented clients in hearings before the Information and Privacy Commissioner, the Alberta Hospital Privileges Appeal Board, and the Workers’ Compensation Board.
Blair is a former infantry officer with the 48th Highlanders of Canada.

Community
Blair has served on the Law Society’s Professional Responsibility, Finance and Conduct Committees.
From 2019 through 2024 Blair served as volunteer President (Chair) of Speed Skating Canada, the country’s National Sport Organization for long track and short track speed skating. In 2024 and 2025, Blair served on an eight member consultation group, providing member input to the rewriting of the Constitution of the International Skating Union.
Blair is a member and Board Member of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Calgary.
