Spencer Hoffman

Spencer began his articles with Carbert Waite LLP in August 2016 after graduating from the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law. Prior to law school, Spencer obtained his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario. 

Prior to joining Carbert Waite LLP, Spencer spent his summers working for BMO Financial Group`s Capital Markets Legal Group in Toronto, the National Hockey League`s Office of the General Counsel in New York, and at a boutique litigation firm in Toronto. Spencer has also spent time consulting for an NHL team.

While in law school, Spencer pursued his interest in litigation by participating in local, national, and international moot competitions. In the 2016 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, Spencer and his team won the national round in Ottawa and advanced to the international rounds in Washington D.C. where Spencer was ranked 15th best oralist in the world amongst 450 competitors. Spencer also won the 2015 Alberta Court of Appeal Constitutional Moot, was a two time semi-finalist of the William McGillivray Moot Shield Competition and placed third overall in the Dentons Negotiation Competition.

Also during law school, Spencer volunteered with Student Legal Assistance and Pro Bono Students Canada, was the VP of the Business Law Society, and played on the school’s hockey team. Spencer continues to co-chair an annual charity sports tournament that he co-founded during his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario, which has raised over $800,000.00 in 7 years to send underprivileged children to summer camp.

Spencer is actively involved in all areas of the firm’s practice.
