On June 22, 2016, Melissa Rico hosted a webinar for more than 500 registrants through the Human Resources Institute of Alberta on terminating employment without cause. She addressed when it is appropriate to dismiss an employee without cause, the law regarding reasonable notice periods and the difference between Code notice and common law notice. She also explored practical tips on how to avoid litigation, including how to conduct the termination meeting and what has to be provided to the employee on termination.

Joe Oppenheim participated in the inaugural Onewalk To Conquer Cancer, benefitting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. On June 25, Joe was among the 1,000 participants that walked 25 kilometres through Calgary’s historic and cultural neighbourhoods and pathways. It was a successful event, raising nearly $1 million.

On June 2, 2016, the Calgary Bar Association presented the inaugural Great Bar Band Battle at Flames Central. It was a fundraiser for the benefit of Calgary Legal Guidance (“CLG”). Carbert Waite LLP is proud to have been a key sponsor.
Six bands comprised of talented lawyers and other members of the Alberta legal community competed for the coveted Bar Band Battle Championship Cup. A panel of three sitting members of Alberta’s judiciary selected the winner. The event was a lot of fun and a great success! More than 400 tickets were sold and over $15,500 was donated.
CLG is a non-profit access to justice organization that, through its dedicated volunteers, staff lawyers and advocates, provides assistance to thousands of people every year. CLG offers volunteer clinics at its downtown office and at a number of outreach clinics targeted to immigrants and indigenous persons as well as other vulnerable populations. CLG also has a number of in-house programs including Homeless Outreach, Social Benefits Advocacy, the Immigration Program, the Elder Law Program and a Family Law Program that focusses on victims of domestic violence.

Tiffany Franklin was invited to present to the Canadian Bar Association, Edmonton Wills & Estates Branch. She provided an update to estate practitioners on cases involving challenges to wills due to undue influence, including:
- The type of evidence the court will consider as a suspicious circumstance;
- Tips for practitioners on how to prepare your case; and
- Comments on using expert evidence from treating physicians.

This year we did not have a keynote speaker. As part of our theme of Special Olympics Calgary and the Community, a round table panel discussion. The discussion was led by Pat Steinberg from Sportsnet The Fan 960 radio. Three athletes and three mentors from the community answered questions in regards to their involvement in Special O and the community. The panel members included Deputy Chief Trevor Daroux from the Calgary Police Service representing the relationship between Special Olympics and law enforcement, Linda Marek, Marketing and Community Relations Manager from Cardel Homes representing the ongoing relationship our organization has with Cardel Homes, and Dan Vanhooren, head coach of the U of C Dinos Basketball team who was paired with one of the athletes who has been the water boy for the Basketball team there for many years.
